Today, we're diving into the world of video conferencing with a focus on zoom and other tools. Before we get started. I'd like to thank you for joining me and remind you to subscribe to the podcast on your favorite platform so that you don't miss an episode. Zoom has become a household name in the past few years, especially during the Covid pandemic. It offers a wide variety of features that make remote communication and collaboration a lot easier. Whether you're hosting a meeting for work, attending a virtual class, or catching up with friends and families, the zoom platform has you got you covered. So this might sound like an advertisement for zoom, but assure you that it is not. But let's talk about the notable features. First off, zoom allows you to join or host a video call with up to 1000 of participants, making it suitable for both small gatherings and large scale events. It offers a high quality audio and video screen, sharing capabilities, virtual backgrounds, and a chat function. Since its inception, zoom has taken significant steps to approve its platform. They have introduced end to end encryption so that it's protected. They've added enhanced passwords, a waiting room, and has provided options for hosts to control participants access to the meetings. These measures have helped boost your security and protect user privacy. In terms of pricing. Zoom offers a variety of different plans catered for different needs. They still have a free plan, which is great, and it has unlimited 1 to 1 meetings and group meetings, but you're limited to 40 minutes. For more advanced features and longer meeting durations, they offer subscriptions both monthly and annually. But how does zoom compare to other solutions such as FaceTime, Skype, or Google Meet? While all these other tools serve as video conferencing systems, there are differences. FaceTime is pretty much exclusive to Apple devices or is browser based, making it ideal where Apple users want to connect seamlessly with each other across their own devices. Although they are making strides to make it available in regular browsers, Skype, on the other hand, has been around for a really long time and offers cross-platform compatibility, making it a very popular choice. But to be honest with you, I can't remember the last time I was asked to join a Skype call. Google meet is integrated with your Google account, which makes it convenient for people who are already using Google tools. It offers similar features to zoom, but the user interface and overall experience may differ. In my opinion, it is not as good as zoom. It also starts as a free product and you can pay for additional features as you need them. The choice between these platforms really depend on your needs. Zoom's popularity grew significantly due during the pandemic. Due to its ease of use, extensive features, and compatibility across different devices and operating systems. Because of this, it has found a wide adoption in a hybrid work environment and very much used in online education settings. Zoom provides a robust solution with features tailored for lots of different uses. As I just mentioned, it offers solid security, variable pricing, and that cross-platform compatibility that we all need in a complex world. While FaceTime, Skype, Google Meet, and even Microsoft Teams have its own strengths. Zoom's versatility and widespread adoption makes it my go to choice in many, many situations.
